In 2008, as the housing market began taking a turn for the worse and the volume of foreclosures was
beginning to spike, mediation has been one of the ways to ease the burden on the court system and
provide a fair and equitable venue for homeowners to work out mortgage delinquencies with their lenders.
Canopy teamed up with the Collins Center for Public Policy in
Florida to pilot a large-scale mediation program
across six judicial circuits, including one of the highest foreclosure-prone areas in the country, Miami-Dade.
The 100% web-based software platform that was previously used to support the
successful hurricane mediation program was repurposed and augmented to
support all of a foreclosure mediation program manager’s operational challenges. Important features in
the platform aid program managers in operating an efficient and successful program. These features include:
case management and workflow, employee productivity measurement instruments, manager
dashboards, xml and excel data exchanges, customized accounting functions, and extensive reporting.

- Scheduling Mediations. The system prompts the user for the available dates based on (1) the block scheduling entered by the trustees/servicers, (2) the remaining availability of the office locations, (3) holidays and office closures, (4) deadline/timeline days specified
by rule. The borrower can choose a preference from the available dates and times.
- Mediator rotation. Assigning mediators is democratic, they get put into a rotation for each location. The system assigns the mediators based on their position in the rotation and their availability.
- Facilitates document exchange between homeowner and lender. Financial docs are received from the homeowner, uploaded into the system and made available to the lender.
